Glen Allen, Virginia 1962

Courtney Road Service Station

This circa-1925 "House with Canopy" filling station 3401 Mountain Rd., Glen Allen, a 1916 Standard Oil Company prototype, was one of thousands built in the mid-1920s, following a demand caused by an increase in cars and improved roads. The station, which served as a social gathering place in the Glen Allen community, was referred to as the "Friendly Service Station" in a Richmond-area telephone book from 1940. The pumps and station have been refurbished and the station building is open for special programs and by appointment.

Meadow Farm Museum

Meadow Farm 3400 Mountain Rd., Glen Allen, a circa-1860 living history farm and museum, shows visitors a glimpse of life on a rural Virginia farm just before the region was torn apart by the Civil War. Interpreters wearing costumes demonstrate what life was like for farm owner Dr. John Mosby Sheppard and his family through presentations in the farmhouse, barn, pastures, blacksmith shop and doctor's office. Most presentations are free. As of publication the farm is open Tuesday to Sunday afternoons from March to November, and Saturdays and Sundays only from December to February. Meadow Farm includes a welcome center, gift shop and meeting room, and the museum sponsors various workshops and special events throughout the year.
